About Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema
Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema was a Dutch resistance army officer who fought against the Nazis during World War II. He is remembered for his book “Soldier of Orange”, which describes his time in the war.
Early Life
Roelfzema was born in the Dutch West Indies in Java, modern-day Indonesia. He moved to the Netherlands with his family when he was a teenager. As a young adult, Roelfzema took up writing and attended the University of Leiden.
Second World War
The Second World War broke out shortly after his first year. Roelfzema joined the Dutch army reserve but never got the chance to fight, as the Germans had completely invaded the Netherlands.
In 1941, while living under German occupation, he wrote the “Leiden manifesto”, encouraging students to resist the Germans. With so much tension in the Netherlands, Roeflzema fled to England and returned to his native country as an undercover agent for the MI6.
He played a significant role in ending the war and was knighted by Queen Wilhelmina for his efforts. After the war, he spent the rest of his life writing books and passed away in 2007.
