About Ernesto Galarza
Ernesto Galarza continues to stay relevant as an important figure in Latin American heritage. The Mexican-American activist, labor organizer, professor, writer, poet and storyteller grew up experiencing life as a farmhand when he would help his family in the harvest season.
He dedicated his time as a labor organizer and activist to advocating for improved working conditions for migrant workers in the United States. He served the American Federation of Labor as a research and education director. As an academic, he taught at the University of California, San Jose State University and the University of Notre Dame.
Personal Life
He immigrated to California with his mother and uncles from his home state, Nayarit in Mexico. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Stanford University and Columbia University respectively.
Works
He is known for publishing books such as “Barrio Boy” (his autobiography), “Merchants of Labour: The Mexican Bracero Story” and “Spiders in the House and Workers in the Field”.
