About Ernie Pyle
Ernie Pyle’s narratives about soldiers in combat won the hearts of many Americans. The award-winning journalist and war correspondent first came to widespread prominence through his stories about people he met while travelling across the United States, Mexico, Canada and South and Central America from the mid-1930s to the early 1940s which he published as a syndicated newspaper column.
Pyle is also known for the stories he wrote about American soldiers who were fighting in the Second World War.
Family Life
He was the only child of William Clyde Pyle and Maria Taylor. He was married to Geraldine Elizabeth Siebolds. The marriage did not produce any children.
Achievements
He was the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize, two National Headliners Club Awards, the Raymond Clapper Memorial Award, the Medal for Merit and the Purple Heart.
Death
Pyle died immediately after he was hit by a machine-gun bullet from Japanese forces on Ie Shima on April 18, 1945.
