About Ernst Hanfstaengl
Ernst Franz Sedgwick Hanfstaengl was his full name, and he was a wealthy German-American business executive famously known for his ties with Adolf Hitler. However, he eventually fell out with Hitler and fled Nazi Germany for the United States.
Background & Education
He was a native of Munich, Bavaria, Germany. In 1909 at age 22, he graduated from Harvard University. He was a brilliant pianist and composed many songs for the football team of Harvard. After graduating, he worked at his father’s art publishing house in New York City.
Relations with Adolf Hitler & Fall Out
Dubbed “Putzi,” he was a close confidant of Hitler in the 1920s and 1930s. He introduced Hitler to Munich’s elite in the 1920s and worked to enhance his reputation. Additionally, he contributed to funding his “Mein Kampf” publishing. He also devised the Hitler salute “Sieg Heil.”
He was dismissed from Hitler’s staff in 1933 as the NSDAP began to cement its control. However, after being criticized by Unity Mitford, he lost Hitler’s favor and felt he attempted to murder him on a plane trip in 1937, forcing him to flee Germany eventually.
Working for the US Government
During World War II, the Americans captured him and made him work for the “S-Project” of President Roosevelt, his Harvard club colleague. He provided classified information about Hitler and over 350 Nazi leaders.
Death
He died from natural causes at age 88.
