About Ernst Mach
Ernst Mach was an Austrian physicist and philosopher who made huge advances in the principles of optics, mechanics and wave dynamics.
Background and Family
He was from Chrlice in Moravia, which was then part of the Austrian Empire. His parents were Johann Mach and Josephine Lanhaus. He was the first of three siblings.
Education
He was home schooled by his parents until he was 14. In 1853, he entered the sixth class of the public Piarist Gymnasium in Kremsier at the age of 15. The young physicist then proceeded to the University of Vienna, where he studied mathematics, physics and philosophy. He received a doctorate in physics in 1860.
Career and Accomplishments
Ernst Mach served as a teacher in physics and mechanics in Vienna. He then became a professor of mathematics at the University of Graz in Austria. Throughout his career, he considered himself as a physicist and all his research was physical. He later on became a professor at the Charles University in Prague in 1867 and remained there for 28 years. His career saw him make advances in optical and photographic techniques for the measurement of sound and waves between 1873 and 1893.
