About Esperanza Aguirre
Esperanza Aguirre started her public service in 1976. Within three years, she had served as the leader of Spain’s Department of Publicity and Tourism. She went on to work with the Ministry of Culture before she was voted into the Senate in 1996. In the same year, she was made the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport.
The celebrated Spanish politician was appointed the President of the Senate in 1999 and served until 2002. A year after leaving office, Aguirre was voted into the Assembly of Madrid, and was later selected as the President of the Community of Madrid.
Family
She was raised by her parents Piedad Gil de Biedma Vega de Seoane and her husband José Luis Aguirre Borrell. The politician spent her childhood with her brother Jaime Gil de Biedma, who would become a poet.
In 1974, she became the wife of landholder Fernando Ramírez de Haro. Their children include Spanish aristocrat Fernando Ramírez de Haro y Aguirre.

She’s a product of Complutense University.
Honors
Her service to her country has earned her many laurels including the Grand Cross of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Charles III, and the Honorary Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

She has been associated with a number of political parties such as the People's Party, the People's Alliance, and the Liberal Union.
Aguirre was the first female to be named as the president of Spain’s senate.
