About Esther Rantzen
Esther Rantzen was initially trained as a studio manager for BBC Radio. She worked in different positions for the BBC before making her first TV appearance in 1968 when she sat in for Bernard Braden for the show titled “Braden's Week”.
In 1973, the show was changed to “That's Life!” and Rantzen was named the host. She stayed on the show for over two decades and made it one of the most popular television programs in Britain.
Charity works
Aside from her works in the media, the British journalist has also found fame for her philanthropic works. In 1986, she founded Childline, a popular counseling service intended to help young people below the age of 19.
She is further celebrated for her ‘The Silver Line’ initiative which was launched in 2012. The project was designed to help older people combat loneliness.
Family
She spent her childhood with her parents Henry Barnato and Katherine Flora Rantzen. She was raised alongside her sister called Priscilla N. Taylor. She was the wife of television executive Desmond Wilcox until his death in 2000. Their three children include television personality, Rebecca Wilcox.
Education
Before studying at the University of Oxford’s Somerville College, she was a student of North London Collegiate School.
Awards
She has been a recipient of the Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and Commander of the Order of the British Empire medals. In 2015, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Women in Film and Television have also honored her with their “Lifetime Achievement Award”.
