About Eugène Atget
Eugène Atget has been recognized as one of the inventors of modern-day documentary photography. The French photographer began his career in the 1880s. He was best known for capturing the street scenes and architecture of the city of Paris prior to its modernization.
Most of his works were published after his demise by American photographer Berenice Abbott. Among his most popular works were “Au Tambour” and “Grand Trianon”. At the beginning of the 1890s, he started his “Old Paris” project in which he documented some buildings and landmarks located in the city.
Family
He was born Jean-Eugène-Auguste Atget and was the son of Clara-Adeline Hourlier and Jean-Eugène Atget. He was married to Valentine Delafosse Compagnon.
Exhibitions
As one of the most prominent photographers in the 18th and 19th Centuries, Atget had his works exhibited at a number of well-known art centers. Some popular places where his works have been displayed are The Art Institute of Chicago, and the International Photography Hall of Fame.
Trivia
The Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris purchased his work in 1898.
He served in the merchant navy after his secondary education.
