About Eugene Sledge
Before releasing his first publication, Eugene Sledge was already a national hero after participating in the Second World War. He started his writing career after returning from the war with a memoir titled “With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa” which was released in 1981.
His second memoir “China Marine: An Infantryman's Life after World War II” was posthumously released in 2002.
Family
He was raised by his parents Mary Frank Sledge and his physician husband Edward Simmons Sledge. He had an older brother called Edward Simmons Sledge II. He was married to Jeanne Arceneaux and fathered two children.
Education
In 1942, he completed his education at Murphy High School. He later attended the Marion Military Institute and before joining Georgia Institute of Technology. After his service in the military, he enrolled at the University of Florida, and Auburn University.
Honors
While with the military, he received many laurels including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Death
He was diagnosed with stomach cancer which later caused his death in 2001.
Trivia
His work “With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa” inspired PBS’ documentary titled “The War”, and the 2010 series “The Pacific”.
In the latter, his character was played by American actor Joseph Mazzello.
He was 22 years old when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps.
