About Eugène Sue
Though he was not particularly sensational, the French author was excellent at his craft. He serialized thrillers such as “Les Mystères de Paris,” which was well-received in parts of England.
Early Years
The Paris-born participated in the naval battles. Later in 1828, he published such maritime books as “Kernok le pirate” in 1830 and “La Salamandre” in 1832.
Notable Works
His first major serialized novel “Mathilde” expressed his interest in social issues. Influenced by socialist views, he authored “Le Juif errant”, a novel that chronicled the conflict between the protagonist and the villain, a Jesuit called Rodin. From 1952, he published essays against the Second French Empire. He adapted such books as “Le Juif errant” and “Les Mystères de Paris” for plays. His character was featured in “The Prague Cemetery,” a 2010 novel by Italian writer Umberto Eco.
Accolade
He was awarded the Legion of Honour, the highest French order of merit.
