About Eugène Viollet-le-Duc
Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was a prominent French architect and writer whose fame rested on his restoration of several major French medieval landmarks. His projects include the Basilica of Saint-Denis, and Notre-Dame de Paris. He also played a major role in the construction of the Statue of Liberty.
Early Years
Viollet-le-Duc was born in 1814, which was the last year of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s rule. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts where he received practical teaching in architecture. His first project was a barricade, which he’d constructed during his participation in the 1830 French Revolution (also known as the Second French Revolution or the July Revolution).
Later Life
His first restoration project happened eight years later after the Revolution when he was asked to create a plan on how to complete a cathedral in Narbonne, France. Viollet-le-Duc had a successful career and in his later years, he became a writer of architectural history.
Family
He married Elisabeth Templer in 1834 and had two children, but separated after a few years.
Death
Following an illness that struck him while hiking in the Alps, he passed away on September 17, 1879, aged 65.
