About Eunice Kennedy Shriver
Eunice Kennedy Shriver initially gained fame as a member of the popular Kennedy family known for their works in the history of American politics. She, nonetheless, gained global prominence for her advocacy and philanthropic work.
In 1957, she was elected as the head of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation. During her tenure, she changed the activities of the organization and focused on people suffering from intellectual disabilities. Four years later, she helped the government to establish the President's Panel on Mental Retardation.
She received lots of applause for forming the Camp Shriver in 1962. This initiative would later be known as the Special Olympics, a sports festival for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
Widely known for her stance on disability and children’s health, she created the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Center for Community of Caring in 1982.
Family
She was one of the children of Rose Fitzgerald and Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. Former President John F. Kennedy; Edward Kennedy, a U.S. Senator; and Robert F. Kennedy, a politician, were some of her siblings.
In 1953, she got married to American diplomat Sargent Shriver, and together they raised five kids named Mark Kennedy Shriver, Robert Sargent Shriver III, Anthony Paul Kennedy Shriver, Timothy Perry Shriver, and Maria Owings Shriver.
Education
She had her early education at Convent of The Sacred Heart and continued at Manhattanville College. She further attended Stanford University where she read sociology.
Awards
In 1984, she received the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Trivia
She worked with other government institutions such as the Federal Industrial Institution for Women, and the U.S. Justice Department.
