About Everett Dirksen
Everett Dirksen became a member of the U.S. Army at the age of 21 years. He decided to join the military to show his family’s allegiance to the United States, despite having a German background. At the beginning of the First World War, he served as a member of the 328th Field Artillery Regiment. He finished his career in the army as a Second Lieutenant.
Political Journey
Dirksen decided to go into politics in 1926 as a member of the Pekin City Council. Between 1933 and 1949, he served as one of the members of the United States House of Representatives. Two years after leaving the House, he was elected into the U.S. Senate where he represented Illinois State.
He served as the Senate Minority Whip before he was appointed as the Senate Minority Leader in 1959. A Republican, he held the position for a decade before he was replaced by Hugh Scott.

His parents were Antje Conrady and Johann Friedrich Dirksen. He had a twin brother named Thomas Reed Dirksen. The politician was married to Louella Carver. The couple had a daughter named Joy, who would later marry American politician Howard Baker.

He was a product of the University of Minnesota.

He received honorary degrees from institutions like Bradley University, Hanover College, and Lewis University
