About Fannie Farmer
Fannie Farmer’s decision to make the most of her unfortunate situation led to her leaving a legacy that has lasted for over a century. She had to cut her formal education short at 16 years old due to a stroke which resulted in her inability to walk for many years. In the meantime, she took to running a boarding house in her mother’s home where her meals gained repute for their quality. She went on to study at the Boston Cooking School, where she eventually became the principal. She is remembered best for her “The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book”, first published in 1896.

She was the daughter of editor/printer John Franklin Farmer and his wife, Mary Watson Merritt. She was raised alongside three younger sisters.
Other Ventures
She was later known for her lectures and recipes on convalescent cooking, which she sometimes taught to doctors and nurses.
Death
She died on January 15, 1915 from stroke complications.
