About Fannie Lou Hamer
Fannie Hamer was a renowned American civil rights activist who played a vital role in women orientation into government offices during her time. Before becoming an activist, she suffered a number of racial abuses from her environment.
She eventually started her civil rights activism in 1962 and went ahead to lead several civil rights movements. Due to her resilience, she was able to empower some marginalized persons to claim their rights through her Freedom Farm Cooperative initiative.
She was the founder of the National Women's Political Caucus and the political party known as Freedom Democratic Party in 1964 - where she served as Vice chairwoman.
Family Life
Her parents were James and Ella Townsend. She had nineteen older siblings. She was married to Perry Hamer from 1944 till 1977. Her children included Vergie and Dorothy.
Achievements
She was bestowed honorary degrees by Howard University in 1972, Columbia College Chicago in 1970, and received a Doctor of Law from Shaw University.
In 1993, she was inducted into the "National Women's Hall of Fame" and earned a "Paul Robeson Award" from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
She was also awarded with the "National Sojourner Truth Meritorious Service Award", and the "Mary Church Terrell Award" from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Hamer abandoned her education to help her aging parents at age 12.
She had polio as a child.
