About Ferdinand de Lesseps
French diplomat Ferdinand Marie, Comte de Lesseps was known for pioneering the development of the Suez Canal. This native greatly reduced the sailing distances between Europe and East Asia since the Mediterranean and the Red Sea had been merged.
Early Life
The diplomat lived out his youth in the neighborhoods of Versailles and later immigrated to Italy to attend the College of Henry IV in Paris. He graduated and was later employed in the commissary department of the army. He rose to assistant vice-consul at Lisbon from 1825 to 1827.
Career
The diplomat was appointed vice-consul at Alexandria in 1832 and was later given the role of consul at Rotterdam in 1839. Lesseps's success with merging the seas surged him on to recreate this success in building a Panama Canal during the 1880s. The project was, however, abandoned due to a surge in malaria and yellow fever in the area. The United States took up the project and completed it in 1914. This initiative solved a lot of transportation issues for both parties.
Personal life
Lesseps first married Mlle Agathe Delamalle from 1837 to 1853 and later divorced and remarried Mlle Louise-Helene Autard de Bragard from 1869 to 1894. The diplomat died in 1894 and was survived by 9 children.
Awards
He was the winner of the Lesseps Albert Medal in 1870.
