About Ferdinand Piëch
The former chairman of the Volkswagen Group will always be remembered as the one who turned the German company from a struggling car manufacturer into a world-recognised automobile giant. The engineer died at 82.
Early Life
He was born in Vienna, Austria. He studied at ETH Zurich and graduated in 1962 and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Career
Piëch spent the late 1960s and early 1970s launching his career at Porsche in Stuttgart. He was made the manager of tech engineering and designed concepts for Audi models. He was later transferred to Volkswagen AG, where he chaired the board of management. A major turnaround for the company was the introduction of the VW New Beetle in 1997 which was a huge financial success.
Personal Life
He fathered 12 children by 4 different women. One of his sons, Toni Piëch, founded Piech Automotive.
Awards
In 1999, he was named “Car Executive of the Year.” He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2014.
He was honoured with the Man of the Year Award by Automobile Magazine in 2011. The award was in recognition of the immense impact he had on the fortunes of Volkswagen Group.
Trivia
He was once described as “Machiavellian” and “an autocrat’s autocrat” by the American magazine Wired.
