About Ferdinand von Zeppelin
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, was the 1893 Grand Duchy of Hesse award winner. He was known for the invention and development of the first rigid dirigible, a lighter-than-air vehicle named after him in 1900.
Early Years
Zeppelin came from a noble family and was born to Friedrich Jerôme Wilhelm Karl Graf von Zeppelin and Amélie Françoise Pauline. The inventor was mostly home tutored until he joined the army in 1855 and 1890 as a General Lieutenant in the Infantry.
Career
Zeppelin's idea for large airships was coined in 1874 after he visited a balloon camp during his army days. After he resigned from the army in 1891, the inventor focused solely on his idea of having hot air as a fuel for flying in the skies. By 1900 Zeppelin made his first flight in Germany and produced more of his inventions, which were adopted as long-distance bombers in the German War.
Personal life
Zeppelin married Isabella Freiin von Wolff in 1890. The inventor, unfortunately passed on in 1917.
Achievements
The inventor was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in 1975.
