About Fernando Belaúnde Terry
Terry was known to be a politician and the ex-president of Peru. He governed the country for two terms. His first tenure was from 1963 to 1968 and in 1980, he was re-voted into power and served for another five years.
Family and Education
He was born into a family of politicians. His father was one time a prime minister of Peru and his grandfather also served as a finance minister. He had his education at the University of Miami and the University of Texas.
Terry was married multiple times and fathered three children.
Political Career
The former president studied architecture when he was at the University of Texas. Before he ventured into politics, he served as a professor at Escuela Nacional de Ingenieros of Lima and was later appointed the dean of the architecture department in the same school.
His political career started in 1944. He was among those that formed the National Democratic Front Party. He was also an active member of the Accion Popular party (Popular Action), which was formed by him.
Belaunde Terry began to vie for the presidential seat from 1956 but it was unsuccessful. After seven years of running for the same position, he won the presidential seat. During his terms as president, he undertook a number of projects in Peru which included building the Peruvian National Bank and engaging in hydroelectric projects.
After leaving office, he served in the Peruvian Senate from 1985 until his death in 2002.
