Early Life
A graduate of architecture from the University of São Paulo, he was born into a middle-class family in São Paulo, Brazil.
“City of God” and Other Career Highpoints
After years of independent TV, he veered into commercials and eventually directed “Ra Tim Bum,” a children’s TV series. In the 1990s, he co-founded Brazil’s biggest advertising company O2 Filmes, which produced the 2002 epic crime film “City of God.” The film, which starred Alice Braga, Alexandre Rodrigues and Phellipe Haagensen, enjoyed worldwide popularity and was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. His directorial credits are not limited to film. He also served as one of several directors of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
Personal Life
Away from the cameras, he loves to farm and has planted avocado, coffee, mahogany and more.
Recognition
He scored 4 Academy nominations for his 2005 thriller “The Constant Gardener.” The film also received a Golden Globe Award for Best Director nomination. Rachel Weisz, a star of the film, took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. Weisz also won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the same role.
His film “City of God” earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
