Fernando Morientes is a former striker of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team. He went into coaching after the conclusion of his playing career.
Playing Career
Morientes had an amazing career as a player. He played as a forward for a host of notable European clubs. To begin with, the Spanish soccer icon started his senior career with Albacete, scoring five goals in the 22 appearances he made for the club between 1993 and 1995.
He signed for Real Zaragoza in 1995. He played in 66 games for the club and scored 28 goals before joining Real Madrid in 1997. With Madrid, he built an effective partnership with fellow Spanish player Raúl.
He was picked by Liverpool in January 2005 and after spending one year with the English club, he returned to Spain to play for Valencia.
He was called up to the Spanish senior national team in 1998 and scored in his first appearance for the team in a 4-0 win over Sweden in a friendly encounter. Morientes scored many more goals for Spain, totaling 27 goals in just 47 appearances for his nation’s national team.
Coaching Career
The Spaniard started coaching in 2012, taking charge of the youth team of Spanish club, Huracán. That same year he was recruited by Real Madrid to manage the club’s youth side. He spent two years in that role before being employed by another Spanish side Fuenlabrada in 2015.
Accomplishments
Morientes achieved a lot as a player. He won multiple La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid. With Liverpool, he lifted the UEFA Super Cup in 2005.
Facts
As a player he retired at the age of 34.
He was chosen as the cover of the Spanish edition of simulation video game FIFA 99.
He married Maria Lopez in 1999.
