About Fidel V. Ramos
Fidel V. Ramos started his career in the military in 1950, four decades before he ventured into full-time politics. Ramos, who rose to the rank of general in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) also served as its Chief of Staff from 1986 to 1988 during the reign of President Corazon Aquino.
In 1988, he was appointed by Aquino as Secretary of National Defense. He won the 1992 presidential elections to become the 12th President of the Philippines. His time in office is associated with the progress of the economy of the Philippines on the international front.
Family Life
Narciso Ramos, his father, served in the House of Representatives of the Philippines for five terms while Angela Valdez, his mother was an educator and suffragette. The politician left behind a wife, Amelita Martinez, whom he married in 1954. He had five daughters with her.
Achievements
In 2001, he received the World Peace Prize.
Trivia
He resigned from his post as Philippine Envoy to China in November 2016, barely six months after his appointment by President Duterte citing his disagreement with the latter’s controversial drug war.
