About Frances Sargent Osgood
Frances Sargent Osgood is regarded as one of the most influential female poets of the 1830s and 1840s. At age 14, she had her poems published for the first time in “Juvenile Miscellany”, a 19th century bimonthly children’s magazine.
In her twenties, she continued to have her works published in literary magazines as a well-known member of the literary society of New York.
Her works include “A Wreath of Flowers from New England”, “The Snowdrop, a New Year Gift for Children” and “The Casket of Fate”.
Personal Life
She was the daughter of Mary Ingersoll and Joseph Locke. She was married to painter Samuel Stillman Osgood, the father of her three daughters. The third died at a few months old and the eldest two died a year after her own death.
Scandal
A scandal broke out after poet Elizabeth F. Ellet spread rumours about Edgar Allan Poe and Osgood having an affair when both were still married to their respective partners.
Death
She died on 12 May 1850 from tuberculosis.
