Early Life & Family
Born in Milan, Italy to Luiscita Minelli and Franco Schiavone, she made her home in her native land in order to remain connected to her roots. Francesca fell in love with tennis in her early childhood and tennis loved her back. She dreamed of being among the top 10 tennis players in the world.
Career Highlights
After a much-anticipated clash between Francesca and former French tennis player Mauresmo, the Italian landed the decisive blow and won the Fed Cup tie. Later at the 2010 Roland Garros, she won the French Open to become the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam. A year later, in 2011, she was denied a second successive French Open title in the final as she finished second on the podium.
In 2018, after almost 20 years of turning professional, she retired from active tennis and took up coaching.
All in all, she swept eight major titles in her very successful career, including three Fed Cup titles.

Francesca was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. However, after a 7-month treatment, the Italian star beat the tumor.

In a fourth round game at Svetlana at the Australian Open women’s singles in 2011, she and Russian tennis player Svetlana Kuznetsova faced off for a whopping four hours and 44 minutes. In what was the longest women’s singles Grand slam match, the Italian came out the victor and proceeded to the quarterfinal of the tournament.
The right-handed tennis player raked in more than $11 million in prize money over the course of her professional playing career.
In 2021, it was announced that she had taken up the job of coaching and mentoring Croatian tennis player Petra Martić.
