The Italian politician served as the President of Italy from July 3, 1985 to April 28, 1992. He was preceded by Sandro Pertini and succeeded by Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. He also served as a Prime Minister of Italy under President Sandro Pertini and formed the Democratic Union for the Republic (UDR) party in February 1998.
Family
Cossiga was married to Giuseppa Sigurani in 1960 and they were divorced in 1998. They had two children.
Education
He studied at the University of Sassari.
Political Career
He assumed office as the Minister of the Interior of Italy from February 12, 1976 to May 11, 1978 under Prime Minister Aldo Moro. The politician was appointed Prime Minister of Italy on August 5, 1979 following the death of Moro and served in this capacity until October 18, 1980. He led a government’s alliance put together by Christian Democrats, Socialists, Republicans and Liberals.
From November 23, 1974 to February 12, 1976, he served as the Minister of Public Administration and became a member of the Italian Senate during the 1983 general elections. He was later elected the President of the Senate on July 12, 1983.
Death
His death was reported on August 17, 2010 at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic after he suffered from respiratory problems.
