The English master navigator and aviator garnered worldwide attention for his solo circumnavigation of the world in his yacht, Gipsy Moth IV.
Aviation
Born in Barnstaple, England, he set the record as the first man to fly solo from the east to the west across the Tasman Sea from New Zealand to Australia in 1931. During World War II, he developed a navigation manual publishing business in London.
In 1967, he became the first man to completely navigate the globe in a yacht. For many people, he represented a challenge to reach for further heights in life.
Gipsy Moth IV
In his 53ft yacht, Gipsy Moth IV, he embarked on sea voyage from Plymouth in August 1966 in order to solo circumnavigate the world. His final voyage took place between January and February, 1971.
Recognition
In 1967, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him with the same sword her predecessor had used to knight famous explorer and navigator Sir Francis Drake.
