About Francis Picabia
Francis-Marie Martinez de Picabia was a French painter and poet. He was also known as “Papa Dada” in recognition of him being one of the pioneers of the Dada movement in New York City and Paris.
Early Life and Career
Picabia was born in Paris to a Cuban father and French mother. His Cuban heritage will later play a crucial role in his art career. In the late 1800s, he started his art career under the tutelage of artist Fernand Cormon at the École des Arts Decoratifs. His early works were inspired by Alfred Sisley, and he usually painted churches, riverbanks, and lanes.
Between 1913 and 1915, Picabia travelled to New York City several times and played a critical role in its avant-garde movement. He also introduced modern art to North America. When the First World War broke out, Picabia left his home country to seek refuge in Spain and then the Americas. The war inspired him to find another style and he showed his new paintings in New York.
After an illness, Picabia turned to writing. He published his poems in 1917 entitled “52 Mirrors.” He also used his skills to come up with several Dada-inspired writings.
Personal Life
He married French writer and critic Gabrièle Buffet and they had four children: Laure, Jeanine, Pancho, and Vincent. The pair divorced in 1930.
Death
The French poet and painter passed away on November 30, 1953, aged 74.
