About Francis Scott Key
Francis Scott Key was a lawyer, amateur poet and author of the first half of the 19th century. He is remembered best for being the originator of the lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, the national anthem of the United States, which were borrowed from his poem, “Defence of Fort M’Henry”. He had written the poem following his observation of Fort McHenry by the British in 1814.
For forty years, he worked as a lawyer in Washington D.C. and Maryland, eventually becoming the District Attorney of the District of Columbia, serving from 1833 to 1841.
Family Life
He was the son of lawyer, judge and Continental Army commissioned officer, John Ross Key. His mother's name was Ann Phoebe Dagworthy Charlton. He was a son-in-law to planter Edward Lloyd IV through his marriage to his daughter, Mary Tayloe Lloyd. The couple had 11 children together.
Death
He died on 11 January 1843 from pleurisy.
