About Francisco Franco
Francisco Franco was a Spanish general and dictator who ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. He rose to power after overthrowing the Spanish democratic republic with military help from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during the Spanish Civil War. The war left about half a million people dead and Franco victorious. He then established an autocratic dictatorship during which he adopted the title of El Caudillo (The Leader). The early stage of his reign was characterized by frequent persecution and execution of political opponents as well as the censoring of the media.
Personal Life
He was married to Carmen Polo from 1923 until his death in 1975. They had a daughter named Carmen Franco.
Trivia
He restored the monarchy in Spain before he died.
