About Franco Baresi
Franco Baresi is a former Italian soccer player who has been described as one of the world’s greatest central defenders of the twentieth century. After he was rejected by Internazionale, Baresi moved to city rivals, A.C. Milan, and became a prominent member of their youth team. He was later promoted to the senior team where he would spend his whole career which lasted for two decades.
He helped Milan to win three UEFA Champions League titles and six Serie A trophies. He also won other trophies such as the Intercontinental Cup, and the European Super Cup.
International career
Baresi was a member of the Italian U21 team when he earned his first senior team call-up in 1980. However, he made his debut four years later. He was a member of the team that won the FIFA World Cup in 1982.
Post-retirement
This soccer legend has spent most of his life after retirement as a coach. In 2002, he was appointed as the head coach of his former team’s U20 side. He took charge of the U19 side four years later. He has also served as the director of football for English side Fulham.
Family
His brother Giuseppe Baresi played for Internazionale.
Achievements
Aside from his glories with his various teams, Baresi has also recorded some individual honors. In 2013, he was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame. He’s also a member of the AC Milan Hall of Fame.
He came second at the 1989 Ballon d'Or ceremony. The former central defender was voted the AIC Serie A Player of the Century in 2000.
