About Francois Coli
French pilot Francois Coli’s attempt to set a world record ended in a disaster that cost him his life. Prior to that tragedy, he had worked as a merchant captain and had fought in World War I as a member of the French Navy. He also gained repute as an excellent pilot with the French Air Service. Following the war, he started embarking on flights that would set distance records. One of such was the flight across the Mediterranean Sea along with Lieutenant Henri Roget in January 1919. On May 8 1927, he and Charles Nungesser took off in L’Oiseau Blanc, a biplane in a first attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
Family Life
He was raised in a seafaring family. As of his death, he was a married man with three daughters.
Disappearance
The biplane he was flying with Nungesser disappeared after it was reportedly seen for the last time by a British naval officer off the coast of Ireland. Their remains were never found.
