Background
A native of Bordeaux, France, he read literature at the University of Bordeaux and soon carved a niche as an independent writer.
Literary Works
His earliest works included a collection of poems titled “Les Mainsjointes”, which was published in 1909. He followed up those works with the 1922 book “Le Baiser aux lepreux”.
He was appointed to the Académie Française in 1933. He also worked as an editorial writer for Le Figaro newspaper.
Other distinctive novels are “Le Noeud de vipères" “Thérèse Desqueyroux” and “La Fin de la nuit".
Recognition
He received a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1952.
Trivia
He is the grandfather of French actress and author Anne Wiazemsky, who was famous for appearing in films like “Week End” (1967) and “La Chinoise” (1967).
