About Frank Borman
The brilliant NASA astronaut, Frank Borman, was commander of the famous Apollo 8 mission – first space mission to fly around the moon in 1968.
Early Years
Borman grew up in Arizona. By age 15, he had learnt to fly an airplane. He graduated from the United States Air Force with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1950. He then went on to become a Test Pilot in 1960 and joined NASA two years later.
Career as an Astronaut
He rose quickly through NASA’s ranks, proving himself an astute pilot and a brilliant engineer.
His hard work and determination paid off as he was chosen to lead a 3-man crew in the Apollo 8 moon-mission. The Indiana-born astronaut successfully captained the crew which navigated the spacecraft to the moon, orbited it 10 times and returned to earth safely.
Legacy
The success of the Apollo 8 mission made the subsequent Apollo 11 mission possible; which was captained by famous astronaut Neil Armstrong and made an actual landing on the moon – the very first in earth’s known history.
Life after NASA
After leaving NASA, Borman joined Eastern Airlines in 1969 as a special advisor. He became CEO after a couple of years and chairman of the board a year later.
Borman retired from Eastern airlines in 1986. Afterwards, he managed a Ford dealership with his son and later purchased a huge cattle ranch.
