In 1986 he lost by knockout to Tim Witherspoon in the WBA World Heavyweight title bout. Then, in 1989, he suffered a loss in one of his famous bouts, thus against Mike Tyson for the “Unified world Heavyweight title.”
On September 2, 1995, he finally became a World Champion after outpointing Oliver McCall in a tough twelve-round contest for the “WBC World Heavyweight Champion.”
The boxer retired with a record of 40 wins (38 by knockouts, 2 by decision) and five losses.
