About Frank Buckles
Frank Buckles is remembered best for having been the last surviving American to have served in the First World War. He was just 16 years old when he joined the United States Army in 1917. He was assigned to driving ambulances and motorcycles to transport wounded soldiers for medical care. He was honorably discharged in 1919. He was later captured and kept as a civilian prisoner in the Philippines for three years by Japanese forces during World War II. At the time, he was working in the shipping industry. He became an advocate for the establishment of a National World War I Memorial in his final years.
Family Life
He was the youngest of five children born to James C. Buckles and Theresa J. Buckles. He married Audrey Mayo in 1946 at the age of 45. Their marriage lasted until Mayo’s death in 1999. He had one child.
Achievements
His honors include the World War I Victory Medal, the French Legion of Honor and the Occupation of Germany Medal.
Death
He died at 110 years old on February 27, 2011 from natural causes.
