About Frank Deford
The Maryland-born sports journalist and author had a career spanning nearly four decades. He was well known on NPR’s radio news show “Morning Edition” as a commentator and was the author of the American sports journal, Sports Illustrated from 1962 to 2017. Deford served as a reporter for HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” beginning 1995. A prolific writer, he wrote several books such as “The Best of Frank Deford” (2000), “An American Summer” 2005), “The Old Ball Game” (2005) and “Everybody’s All-American” which was among Sports Illustrated’s Top 25 Sports Books of All Time.

He wed Carol Penner Deford and they had three children.

The sports journalist was an alumnus of Princeton University.
Honors
Deford was a member of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame.
He was the first person to be awarded the Red Smith Award by the Associated press Sports Editors in 2012.
The University of Kansas presented him with the National Humanities Medal for “excellence in journalism” in 2013.
Deford became the first sports reporter who received the W.M Kiplinger Award for “Outstanding Contributions to Journalism”.
