About Frank Hornby
Even though he didn’t have any formal education in training, Frank Hornby was an inventor who created some of the most successful toys of his time; the Hornby Model Railways, Meccano, and Dinky Toys.
Background
Hornby grew up in Liverpool, England. His father, John, worked as a merchant. When the inventor was 16, he dropped out of school to work for his father. In 1887, he married Clara Godefroy and they had three children, Roland, Douglas, and Patricia.
In 1899, he started making toys for his children, and by the following year, he had patented one of his inventions.
Toy Making Business
However, it wasn’t until 1907 that he found success with his toys. He registered Meccano Ltd and started shipping to other countries and then introduced the Dinky models in 1920.
Legacy
Hornby died in 1936. His 150th anniversary was celebrated by the National Museums Liverpool.
