Background
Frank Thomas grew up in Muncie, Indiana, United States with his parents, James and Elizabeth Williams, Who emigrated from Cardiff, Wales before his birth. Frank was a celebrated athlete during his high school urging him to pursue a career in a similar field.
Football Career
Thomas served as a quarterback at University of Notre Dame from 1920 to 1922. He also played for Western State for two years.
Coaching Career
Thomas started his career as a coaching assistant at the University of Georgia in 1923. He then moved to the University of Chattanooga, where he secured a position as head coach. His team recorded 26–9–2 within four seasons. In 1931, he became the head coach at the University of Alabama, where his continuous success placed him in the football hall of fame.
Achievements
Thomas is ranked on the list of most popular Football Coaches.
A bronze statue of him was mounted outside the University of Alabama's Bryant–Denny Stadium.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in the year 1951.
Awards
In 1945 Thomas was awarded SEC Coach of the year.
Death
Thomas died on May 10, 1954 at the age of 55 at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Prior to his death he was diagnosed with heart and lung disease.
