Franz Joseph I of Austria was a famous Emperor of Austria and King of Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia who acceded to the throne after his uncle Ferdinand I of Austria abdicated in 1848. He reigned over the Austro-Hungarian Empire from that time until his death in 1916. Today, he is regarded as Austria's longest-reigning Emperor.
Personal Life
He was married to Empress Elisabeth of Austria from 1854 until her death in 1898. The marriage produced four children, including Crown Prince Rudolf.
Trivia
He was almost assassinated in 1853.
In 1887, his only son Crown Prince Rudolf died in a suicide pact with Baroness Marie Vetsera.
In 1898, his wife Elisabeth was stabbed to death in Geneva by Luigi Lucheni.
The 1914 assassination of his nephew and heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was what triggered World War I.
