About Franz Kline
Franz Kline was a celebrated American painter who popularized the Abstract Expressionism art movement during the 1940s and 50s. He first attracted attention in 1940 with his “Hot Jazz” mural series.
His breakthrough came a decade later when his works were showcased at the famous Charles Egan Gallery. In addition to that, his oeuvres were showcased at some popular art shows including the Whitney Annuals and Biennial, and the Venice Biennale.
Family
He lost his father at the age of five years. He was the husband of Elizabeth Vincent Parsons, a famous ballet dancer.
Education
He studied at Girard College before moving to Boston University to read art. He was also trained at Heatherley School of Fine Art.
Interesting facts
Kline also taught at institutions like Brooklyn-based Pratt Institute and Black Mountain College, North Carolina.
His 1958 work titled “Crow Dancer” was sold at $6.4 million in 2005.
Most of his works have been exhibited at centers like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
