About Franz Stangl
Franz Paul Stangl was an Austrian-born SS commander at the extermination camps of Sobibor and Treblinka during Operation Reinhard. He was caught in Brazil in 1967, extradited to West Germany, and prosecuted for the mass murder of almost one million people. He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison in 1970. Six months later, he died of heart failure.
Early life
On March 26, 1908, Franz Stangl was born in Altmünster, Austria. In 1931, he joined the Austrian police force and, shortly after, the then-illegal totalitarian regime of Adolf Hitler.
T-4 Euthanasia program
Stangl rose fast through the ranks after Anschluss. In 1940 He was appointed superintendent of the T-4 Euthanasia Program at the Euthanasia Institute at Schloss Hartheim, where mentally and physically disabled persons were transported to be executed.
Extermination Camps
In 1942, he was sent to the SS-Obergruppenfuehrer Odilo Globocnik's unit in Poland. From March 1942 until September 1942, Stangl was the commander of Sobibór before being transferred to Treblinka. He, who was always clad in white riding gear, had a reputation as an effective administrator and ruthless in carrying out the objectives of Operation Reinhard.
Escape to South America
Stangl was able to disguise his identity towards the conclusion of the war, and despite being imprisoned in 1945, he was released two years later. He fled to Italy with his Sobibór colleague Gustav Wagner, where he was aided by a Vatican official to enter Syria on a Red Cross passport.
In 1951, he relocated to Brazil, where he obtained work at the Volkswagen plant in Sao Paulo with the assistance of friends.
Arrest, Trial and Death
Simon Wiesenthal, a Nazi hunter, was able to track down and capture Stangl in Brazil in 1967. Stangl was subsequently extradited to West Germany to face trial for the atrocities he committed during World War II. He was prosecuted for the killings of nearly 900,000 people. He acknowledged to the murders. On October 22, 1970, Stangl was found guilty and condemned to life in prison.
On June 28, 1971, he died in a Düsseldorf jail from heart failure.
