About Fred Hampton
Fredrick Allen Hampton, famously known as Fred Hampton, was one of the most vibrant but short-lived American civil rights leaders and activists of the mid-1900s. He rose to prominence when he became the deputy chairman of the national “Black Panther Party (BPP).”
Early Life & Background
Summit Argo, Illinois, was his birthplace, and he grew up in Maywood, Illinois.
He graduated from Proviso East High school in 1966. During high school, he led demonstrations to protest against the exclusion of black students from specific competitions and called on officials to employ more black administrators and teachers. He then attended Triton Junior College and majored in pre-law.
Activism
He was actively involved in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1968, he joined the Illinois chapter of the “Black Panther Party (BPP).”
His organizational skills, charisma, and expressive abilities made it possible for him to rise quickly in the “BPP.” When he became head of the party’s Chicago chapter, he participated in several strikes, organized many weekly rallies, and was actively involved in BPP’s “Free Breakfast Program.” In addition, he was very instrumental in the signing of Chicago’s “nonaggression pact.”
