About Fred Hoyle
English astronomer Fred Hoyle was named as the director of the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy in 1967 and held that post until 1973. He was best known for formulating the stellar nucleosynthesis theory which he proposed in 1946.
Regarded as one of the leading scientists of his time, he was one of the authors of the historic B2FH paper which was initially titled “Synthesis of the Elements in Stars”. As an author, he published many books with the most popular ones titled “Diseases from Space” and “Astronomy and Cosmology: A Modern Course”.
Family
His parents were Mabel Pickard and Ben Hoyle. In 1939, he became the husband of Barbara Clark and together they had two children who became writers including English writer Geoffrey Hoyle.
Education
Before enrolling at Emmanuel College in Cambridge, he studied at Bingley Grammar School.
Achievements
His works earned him many accolades such as the Mayhew Prize, the Royal Medal and the Smith's Prize. In 1957, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Trivia
He also published many sci-fi novels with some titled “The Black Cloud” and “The Incandescent Ones”.
