About Fred Shuttlesworth
Fred Lee Robinson, famously known as Fred Shuttlesworth, was a highly enthusiastic African American civil rights activist and minister of the Gospel. He was a founding father of the “Southern Christian Leadership Conference”, working earnestly to end racism and segregation in the USA. He also initiated the “1963 Birmingham Campaign”.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Mount Meigs, Alabama. He graduated as a valedictorian from Rosedale High School. He began preaching in the 1950s at a Baptist Church in Alabama while he studied for his BSc and BA degrees at Alabama State College and Selma University.
Career & Activism
Although he came under numerous attacks, he collaborated with multiple civic organizations in Birmingham, including the Civic League, NAACP and SCLC to combat racism and segregation.
He then relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1961 and in 1966, he established the “Greater New Light Baptist Church”. However, in 1965, he was pivotal in organizing the famous march and campaign for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery. After retiring in 2007, he moved to Birmingham, working with Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement.
Legacy
The “Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport” and Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award are bestowed in his honor.
Death
He died aged 89 on October 5, 2011, after battling a brain tumor for years.
