About Frederick Cook
Frederick Cook, in full Frederick Albert Cook, was an American ethnographer, explorer, and physician. In April 1908, he made a claim that he had discovered and reached the North Pole; however, his claim was denounced in 1909, making him a famous controversial figure in American history.
Background & Education
He was of German descent and was born in Hortonville, New York, USA. Cook was an alumnus of Columbia University and held a doctorate in medical studies from the New York University Medical School.
Notable Expeditions
Cook served as the physician doctor on the “Arctic expedition (1891-1892)” and the “Belgian Antarctic Expedition (1897-1899),” all of which were led by the revered Robert Peary.
He made two trips to “Tierra del Fuego” in 1897. He also led an expedition on “Denali (Mount McKinley)” twice between 1903 and 1906.
Controversies & North Pole
On April 21, 1908, Cook claimed he had discovered and reached the “North Pole.” However, in December 1909, a review panel from the University of Copenhagen discredited his claim and declared his assertions unfounded.
Unfortunately, in 1923, he was put behind bars after being accused of fraudulent business practices. However, he received parole in 1930, and in 1940, he received a presidential pardon from President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Cause of Death
The explorer suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died in August 1940.
