About Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman.
His Life
Born a slave, Douglass was discouraged to learn to read and write. In secret, he taught himself these skills, and later tried to teach other slaves. After a couple of failed escape attempts, Douglass finally made it to freedom in 1838. Once free, he became a highly influential public speaker, most often talking about abolitionist ideas. Frederick Douglass wrote three successful and famous autobiographical books. Each were influential in the cause to abolish slavery in the United States. Douglass also supported equality for women, Native Americans, and immigrants.
