About Freeman Dyson
Freeman Dyson was an outstanding English-American mathematician and physicist. He rose to international prominence due to his astounding works in astronomy and quantum electrodynamics. He was also known for his remarkable achievements in nuclear engineering and solid-state physics.
Before his death, Dyson had established several key concepts, which include the Dyson tree, Dyson sphere, Dyson’s transform and Dyson’s series.
The veteran physicist was also known for his amazing writing skills, which can be seen in some of his popular books including “Infinite in All Directions”, which was published in 1988. He is also credited for authoring the 1999 book titled, “The Sun, the Genome and the Internet”. Dyson is also the author of “The Scientist as Rebel”.
Family Life
Dyson had two children, George and Esther, with Verena Huber-Dyson, his first wife. In the late 1950s, he got married to Imme Jung, with whom he birthed four more children with – Mia, Emily, Rebecca, and Dorothy.
Dyson was born to seasoned English composer, George Dyson. His mother served as a social worker. Dyson had an older sister named Alice.
Achievements
As a great physicist and mathematician, Dyson received several accolades and honors. Some of the awards he had received include Lorentz Medal, which was presented to him in 1966.
In 1969, he was honored with the Max Planck Medal. He received the Harvey Prize in 1977.
In 1993, Dyson’s great works and contribution to the development of energy earned him the Enrico Fermi Award.
Death
The veteran physicist passed away (on February 20th, 2020) following complications arising from a fall – he was 96-years-old.
Trivia
Dyson once served as a professor of physics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
At a very tender age of four, Dyson attempted to calculate the number of atoms present in the sun.
He attended Winchester College between 1936 and 1941.
He had a BA degree in mathematics from the Trinity College, Cambridge in England.
