About Friedensreich Hundertwasser
Friedensreich Hundertwasser was the pseudonym of Austrian painter and architect Friedrich Stowasser. He is known for his environmental protection advocacy, especially through his building designs.
As a visual artist, he designed stamps, flags, a variety of Japanese wrapping cloth (Furoshiki) and made numerous paintings while living in the Tooro Kingdom in the 1960s.
His most notable architecture designs include the buildings Hundertwasserhaus, Waldspirale and KunstHausWien.
Family Life
Growing up, he and his mother, Elsa, had to pretend to be Christians to avoid Jewish persecution by the Nazis. He was married twice: first to Herta Leitner from 1958 to 1960 and then to Yuko Ikewada, a Japanese artist, from 1962 to 1966. He had a daughter, Heidi, born in 1982.
Achievements
He was a recipient of awards such as Grand Austrian State Prize for Visual Arts and the Mainichi Prize.
Death
He died on the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship on 19 February 2000.
