About Friedrich Max Müller
Friedrich Max Müller was one of the most prominent philologists during the 19th Century. The German-born British scholar was one of the earliest people to introduce the study of religion and Indology to the western world.
He shared his ideas through his numerous books which included “Sacred Books of the East” and “Chips from a German Workshop”. He was appointed Oxford University’s Professor of Comparative Philology in 1868, becoming the first person to hold that office.
Family
He was the child of lyric poet Wilhelm Müller and his wife Adelheid Basedow. He was married to Georgina Adelaide Grenfell with whom he had four children including American orientalist Wilhelm Max Müller.
Education
The famous philologist was a product of Leipzig University.
Honors
He was awarded the Pour le Mérite prize in 1874 before receiving the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art the following year.
Trivia
He was selected to become one of the members of the prestigious Privy Council in 1896.
His British citizenship was confirmed in 1855.
