About Fulton J. Sheen
Fulton J. Sheen’s priesthood began in 1919 after he was ordained in Illinois, United States. In 1926, he was put in charge of the St. Patrick's church before he was promoted to the position of an assistant bishop in 1951. He became the Bishop of Rochester in 1966 and held that position for three years before he was moved to Newport, Wales to serve as a titular see.
Radio and television career
Sheen is widely considered as one of the earliest televangelists. Between 1930 and 1950, he was the host of “The Catholic Hour” which was broadcasted on NBC. For five years, starting from 1952, he presented a television show titled “Life Is Worth Living” which was shown on DuMont Television Network, and later on ABC.
He also appeared on other television networks including the Church Channel, and EWTN. The renowned American theologian was also known for his radio program dubbed “The Catholic Hour”.
Family
He was originally named Peter John Sheen and was born to Delia and Newton Sheen. He was raised alongside three siblings.
Education
Sheen graduated from Spalding Institute before attending St. Viator College, and Minnesota’s Saint Paul Seminary. He continued at the Catholic University of America, and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
Honors
In 1923, he won the Cardinal Mercier Prize for International Philosophy.
Death
He died while praying in 1979. It was believed that his death was as a result of complications he had from a heart surgery.
Trivia
He was also an author and published lots of books with some titled “The Cross and the Beatitudes” and “Seven Words of Jesus and Mary”.
Growing up, he suffered from tuberculosis.
